SUMMARY:Annual Holiday Book Drive
DESCRIPTION:The Literacy Council of Frederick County is again partnering with Curious Iguana and Barnes & Noble Booksellers for the benefit of Blessings in a Backpack (BIAB) to provide new books for pre K – 8th grade children.  BIAB serves 2100 children in 15 Frederick County schools who depend on school meals as their primary source of nourishment Monday – Friday by providing weekend backpacks of food. Donated books will be included in these backpacks before the winter break. While the Literacy Council serves adult literacy needs\, providing appealing\, age-appropriate books to children fosters literacy at a young age and helps to break the cycle of illiteracy in families. \nTo participate in the Holiday Book Drive\, you may purchase and donate books at either Curious Iguana in downtown Frederick (12 N. Market St.) or Barnes & Noble Booksellers at FSK Mall (5500 Buckeystown Pike).  Or you may simply purchase a book and drop it off at the Literacy Council’s office at 110 E. Patrick St.  The drive will run through December 15\, but donors can continue to participate through Barnes & Noble until January 1\, 2018. \nBook selections should be for pre-kindergarten through middle school age children.  Donors often like to share a childhood favorite or just encourage the habit of reading in a child.  BIAB is unable to distribute books with a specific religious holiday theme\, so they request there be no Christmas-themed books. \nThe Holiday Book Drive\, now in its 11th year\, has provided books for several local agencies including Head Start\, the YMCA’s Early Learning Center\, Toys for Tots\, Advocates for Homeless Families\, and Children of Incarcerated Parents (COIP) as well as Blessings in a Backpack.  In May\, 2017\, Barnes & Noble and Curious Iguana were recognized by the Literacy Council with its Business & Industry Partners in Literacy awards. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:This is a more advanced class than Writing 2.  Students will write clear and logical argument\, process\, cause and effect\, and narrative paragraphs.  Students will write one 5 paragraph essay using rules of grammar\, syntax\, and sentence structure.  Students will read and discuss Tuck Everlasting and be able to write down the main idea of the story in their own words.\n\n\n\nThe class will meet on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. from May 9 through June 27.
