SUMMARY:Stuff the Bus 2023 - June 12 through July 31
DESCRIPTION:The Literacy Council is again participating as a collection site for the United Way’s Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive.  Stuff the Bus is a way for the community to come together to help young people succeed in school and is a way for the Literacy Council to support family literacy. Help share this Flyer too! \nMore than 1 in 3 households in Frederick County struggle to afford basic necessities (http://www.unitedwayfrederick.org/ALICE)\, so they find it very difficult to afford needed school supplies.  This drive helps ensure that all children have the supplies they need to do their homework\, take tests\, and complete projects. In 2022\, hundreds of bins of supplies were collected and thousands of items were purchased with donor gifts. Total Items & Value: An estimated 90\,358 items valued at $75\,054 were distributed to Frederick County students. It is a simple but important way to help children succeed in school. \nSTUFF THE BUS VIRTUAL DRIVE: \nThis year the Literacy Council is also supporting online donations for school supplies through the Stuff the Bus virtual drive organized by the United Way of Frederick County which runs June 12 through July 17. The virtual drive allows for cash donations to purchase school supplies: \nhttps://fundraise.givesmart.com/vf/StuffTheBus23/team/LiteracyCouncil \nDonations of any amount are most appreciated. Here are some examples of what different cash donations might purchase: \n\n$15 buys pencils\, markers\, and crayons for one kindergarten student\n$50 supports one elementary student with basic supplies\n$150 provides a middle school student with all necessary supplies\, including a backpack\n$200 buys a high school student basic supplies\, including a graphing calculator\n$500 provides 10 pre-k students with all necessary supplies\, including backpacks\n\nSTUFF THE BUS IN-PERSON DROP OFF: \nYou may drop off your donation of new items at the Literacy Council office Monday – Friday\, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.\, beginning Monday\, June 19 through Monday\, July 31. \nPlease drop off items in the collection bin in the lobby of our 110 E. Patrick Street entrance to the library (the administrative entrance where our door is located.)  You can enter through our door or the front double doors on Patrick Street.  Those doors will be unlocked between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.  Use this link to view the complete list of needed items. \nThank you for helping us Stuff the Bus and helping FCPS students start the school year with the supplies they need to succeed! \nFor more information about Stuff the Bus and how to donate\, visit https://www.unitedwayfrederick.org/StuffTheBus \n

SUMMARY:Giving Tuesday
DESCRIPTION:Please consider a gift on Giving Tuesday to support adult literacy through the Literacy Council of Frederick County!\nThis year we are participating in a community-wide Giving Tuesday event with the Catalogue for Philanthropy.  Beginning November 20 and through Tuesday\, December 3\, you can support our programs by giving here. \n  \nAdult Literacy Changes Everything …\n\nHealth. Gender equality. Poverty.\nEvery important social issue is impacted by low literacy.\nWhen individuals learn how to read\, write\, do basic math\, and use computers\, they have the power to lift themselves out of poverty\, lower health care costs\, find and keep sustainable employment\, and ultimately change their lives. \n\nYet … one in ten Frederick County adults struggle with functional literacy. This includes native English speakers who can’t read or write\, and English language learners. These skills are fundamental to work\, prosperity\, health\, and family stability. \nThe holiday season is just around the corner. We invite you  to kick it off with us on Giving Tuesday! Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving back. On the Tuesday following Thanksgiving\, people around the world will come together to celebrate generosity and make an impact. \nThis year\, we want to hit our goal of $5\,000 to ensure we can continue to be a resource and #BEACHANGEMAKER in our community!  Help the Literacy Council meet our goal this year for Giving Tuesday of raising $5\,000! \nThese funds are needed to support the recent expansion of our programs including new workplace classes for employees for hospitality/restaurant workers and direct parent support in three local elementary schools and the Judy Center where we are providing tutors for parents whose children attend these schools. \nLast year the Literacy Council of Frederick County’s more than 240 volunteers contributed over 15\,340 hours conducting individual tutoring and class instruction in beginning literacy\, conversation\, pronunciation\, basic computer skills\, writing and civics classes transforming lives for over 230 adults and their families. \nJust look what our students achieved last year!!\n\n\nGot jobs or better jobs\nImproved employability skills\nReceived GED\nEntered other education or training\nAdvanced level(s) in curriculum series\nObtained citizenship\nObtained driver’s licenses\nRegistered to vote or voted for the first time\nIncreased involvement in community activities\nIncreased support for their children’s education\nAttained consumer skills\, wellness and healthy lifestyles\nOther personal goals\n\nWith your support we can have an even bigger impact!

SUMMARY:Holiday Book Drive 2019
DESCRIPTION:The Literacy Council of Frederick County is again partnering with Curious Iguana for our Annual Holiday Book Drive to provide new books for elementary school aged children (PreK through 5th grade). \nWhile the Literacy Council serves adult literacy needs\, providing appealing\, age-appropriate books to children fosters literacy at a young age and helps to break the cycle of low literacy in families.  The books will be given to parents of children in elementary school who are participating in the Literacy Council’s tutoring or class instruction programs. The Literacy Council recently began working directly with the Judy Center and Lincoln\, Hillcrest and Waverley Elementary Schools to provide tutoring at the schools for parents whose children attend these schools\, and many of our other students also have young children with whom to share the books. \nSuggestions for younger grades include: board books\, picture books (fiction and nonfiction)\, early chapter books; and for older grades: mid-grade chapter books\, paperback series\, graphic novels\, and STEM titles. \nTo participate in the Holiday Book Drive\, you may purchase and donate books between November 15 and December 13 at Curious Iguana in downtown Frederick (12 N. Market St.).  Or you may simply purchase a book and drop it off at the Literacy Council’s office at 110 E. Patrick St. no later than December 13. \nDonors often like to share a childhood favorite or just encourage the habit of reading in a child. We request no religious holiday themed books so that we are not limited in distributing them. \nDownload a flyer to share here. \nThe Holiday Book Drive\, now in its 13th year\, has provided books for several local agencies including Head Start\, the YMCA’s Early Learning Center\, Toys for Tots\, Advocates for Homeless Families\, Children of Incarcerated Parents (COIP)\, and Blessings in a Backpack.

SUMMARY:2019 Unity Campaign
DESCRIPTION:The Literacy Council is again honored to be one of 32 nonprofit organizations participating in the Unity Campaign for Frederick County\, hosted by United Way of Frederick County. The Unity Campaign supports the over one in three households in Frederick County that struggle to afford basic human necessities! Together\, we can make a difference! \nThe Unity Campaign is a collaborative project between nonprofit partners\, sponsors\, and the greater Frederick community to support our most vulnerable neighbors by giving to a nonprofit organization of their choice. \nLiteracy is the basis for success in all other areas of life. It enables people to gain better employment to provide food\, clothing\, shelter and health care for themselves and their families. And the children of literate parents are much more likely to succeed in school. \nThe 2018 Frederick Community Assessment Report conducted by the Frederick County Community Foundation identified several common stressors that negatively impacted the well-being of families.  These include financial hardship\, housing and food instability\, health issues and lack of affordable childcare. Illiteracy compounds each of these stressors\, erecting a barrier that severely limits the financial options of a family. While these are multifaceted and complex issues\, adult literacy is the one factor that can have a positive impact across the board. \nThe majority of fundraising will take place during the “12 Days of Giving” which begins on September 11th and continues through September 22th.  However\, the campaign is currently running and accepting donations!  Please consider donating by designating the Literacy Council of Frederick County or by supporting the campaign as a whole.  Matching funds will provide more bang for your donated bucks! \nVisit http://www.unityfrederick.com/ to learn more about the campaign. \nTo donate online to the Literacy Council\, please visit our Unity Campaign page. SUMMARY:Holiday Book Drive
DESCRIPTION:The Literacy Council of Frederick County is again partnering with Curious Iguana and Barnes & Noble Booksellers for our Annual Holiday Book Drive for the benefit of Blessings in a Backpack (BIAB) to provide new books for pre K – 6th grade children. \nBlessings in a Backpack\, Frederick\, provides weekend backpacks of supplemental nutrition to approximately 2\,500+ children in 17 Frederick County schools. Many of the children depend on school meals as their primary source of nutrition Monday–Friday but are at risk of going hungry from lunch in school on Friday until breakfast on Monday morning. Donated books will be included in these backpacks before the winter break. While the Literacy Council serves adult literacy needs\, providing appealing\, age-appropriate books to children fosters literacy at a young age and helps to break the cycle of illiteracy in families. \nBIAB\, along with Frederick County Public School teachers\, has prepared a recommended book list from which to make your selections. Please select a book from this list to help ensure that BIAB will have an equitable selection of grade level appropriate books for all the children in the program.  This list is also available at Barnes and Noble and Curious Iguana.\n \nTo participate in the Holiday Book Drive\, you may purchase and donate books at either Curious Iguana in downtown Frederick (12 N. Market St.) or Barnes & Noble Booksellers at FSK Mall (5500 Buckeystown Pike).  Or you may simply purchase a book and drop it off at the Literacy Council’s office at 110 E. Patrick St.  The drive for BIAB will run from November 12 through noon on December 17. \nAs of December 14\, we are short about 325 books for 3 grade levels – Pre-K\, 4th and 5th (see edited book list)\, and have extended the drive until December 17. Please help us meet the goal so that each child will have a new book!  All books must be dropped off at the Literacy Council office by noon on Monday the 17th\, or in the drop off box at either Curious Iguana or Barnes and Noble at FSK mall by the end of the day on Sunday the 16th.  If you are unable to go purchase a book but would like to help\, you may make a monetary donation through our website designating the donation for the Book Drive in the Purpose of Donation section\, and we will purchase the book/s on your behalf.\n \nYou can still participate from December 17 through January 1 through Barnes and Noble or until December 24 by bringing books directly to the Literacy Council office.  Book selections after December 12 can be for children of any age. Donors often like to share a childhood favorite or just encourage the habit of reading in a child. We request no religious holiday themed books so that we are not limited in distributing them. The Literacy Council will donate books given after December 12 to other local organizations serving children or use them to support the Council’s parent literacy program. \nThe Holiday Book Drive\, now in its 12th year\, has provided books for several local agencies including Head Start\, the YMCA’s Early Learning Center\, Toys for Tots\, Advocates for Homeless Families\, and Children of Incarcerated Parents (COIP) as well as Blessings in a Backpack. \n
