Each One Teach One

The Literacy Council of Frederick County is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-sectarian, educational organization dedicated to helping non-literate and semi-literate adult residents in the county improve
their language skills through one-on-one
tutoring. We are a member of ProLiteracy Worldwide (formerly
Laubach Literacy Action), and we use Laubach methods with
our students. Basic Literacy is offered to the native-born, and English as a Second Language (ESL) is offered to the foreign-born.

Dancing Bear Toys Celebrates Family Literacy Month with New Product

Parents and educators know
that a child’s first steps toward literacy start in the home at a
very young age. To celebrate National Family Literacy Month in November, Dancing Bear Toys and Gifts, located at 12 North Market Street in Downtown
Frederick, is partnering with the Literacy Council of Frederick County
and offering a new product that promotes childhood literacy. The colorful
Write Me a Story books by eeBoo are oversized with fun, themed stickers
and lined pages. Children use the stickers—and their imagination--to
tell a story and then have an adult help write it in the book. When
they are finished, children can read the stories they created! Using
Write Me a Story books, children as young as three can build and
strengthen critical literacy skills. During November and December, Dancing
Bear will feature four different versions of Write Me a Story
for boys and girls of all interests. Fifteen percent of the proceeds
from the Write Me a Story sales will support the Literacy Council
of Frederick County.
“It’s a pleasure to have
another opportunity to partner with the Literacy Council,” says Dancing
Bear owner Tom England, adding that Dancing Bear’s Holiday Market
for Kids in late November through mid December also benefits the non-profit
organization. “The work the Literacy Council does in our community
is so important, and this is just one small way in which we can show
our support.”
